Gordon Bell: Building Blocks of Computing

نویسنده

  • Charles R. Severance
چکیده

G ordon Bell has had a long and varied career: early employee of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), designer of many of DEC’s PDP series of minicomputers, leader in computer science at the National Science Foundation, long-time proponent of the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, and creator and funder of the Gordon Bell Prize, which ACM awards for improvements to parallel and scalable computing. Today, he’s a researcher emeritus at Microsoft. I recently met with Bell at the Computer History Museum in front of a fully restored and operational PDP-1. Tensors Come of Age: Why the AI Revolution will help HPC

Thirty years ago, parallel computing was coming of age. A bitter battle began between stalwart vector computing supporters and advocates of various approaches to parallel computing. IBM skeptic Alan Karp, reacting to announcements of nCUBE’s 1024-microprocessor system and Thinking Machines’ 65,536-element array, made a public $100 wager that no one could get a parallel speedup of over 200 on re...

Fault Tolerant DNA Computing Based on ‎Digital Microfluidic Biochips

Historically, DNA molecules have been known as the building blocks of life, later on in 1994, Leonard Adelman introduced a technique to utilize DNA molecules for a new kind of computation. According to the massive parallelism, huge storage capacity and the ability of using the DNA molecules inside the living tissue, this type of computation is applied in many application areas such as me...

Solving the Klein-Gordon equation using fourier spectral methods: a benchmark test for computer performance

The cubic Klein-Gordon equation is a simple but non-trivial partial differential equation whose numerical solution has the main building blocks required for the solution of many other partial differential equations. In this study, the library 2DECOMP&FFT is used in a Fourier spectral scheme to solve the Klein-Gordon equation and strong scaling of the code is examined on thirteen different machi...

A Clustering Approach to Scientific Workflow Scheduling on the Cloud with Deadline and Cost Constraints

One of the main features of High Throughput Computing systems is the availability of high power processing resources. Cloud Computing systems can offer these features through concepts like Pay-Per-Use and Quality of Service (QoS) over the Internet. Many applications in Cloud computing are represented by workflows. Quality of Service is one of the most important challenges in the context of sche...
